In recent years, the legal profession has come under tremendous attack. Politicians, crackpot radio talk show hosts and others seem to always find a way to blame the "trial lawyers" for many of our nation's ills. Cries about our jury system and the need for "tort reform" or about criminals being "coddled" by the courts abound. Please remember that this great nation was forged by two primary documents, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. These documents set the United States apart from the rest of the world and many have died to support what they stand for.
Trial lawyers will always fight to maintain the principles and the spirit of these documents, for it was by in large, trial lawyers who wrote them. The next time you hear someone attacking "trial lawyers" or the right to a trial by jury, please take time to consider what agenda they might be pursuing, it certainly is not the agenda for freedom, access to the courts, or justice.
"Freedom of religion; freedom of the press; freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus; and trial by juries impartially selected, I deem [among] the essential principles of our government, and consequently [among] those which ought to shape its administration."
